In this powerful interview on Brian Davila’s channel, Sam Shamoun opens up about salvation, Protestantism, Catholicism, Orthodoxy, the ancient church, the sacraments, and why studying church history changed the way he understood Christianity.
Brian Davila asks Sam Shamoun deep questions about whether Protestants, Catholics, Orthodox Christians, and even people outside the visible boundaries of the ancient churches can be saved. Sam Shamoun explains that no one is saved apart from Jesus Christ, but also emphasizes that God sees the heart, judges people according to what they know, and shows mercy to those who are sincerely seeking truth even when they are mistaken.
Sam Shamoun also shares part of his own journey: growing up with Baptist and Evangelical influence, later encountering Calvinism, and then being challenged by the beliefs of the early church fathers. As Sam Shamoun studied church history, Saint Athanasius, apostolic succession, baptismal regeneration, the Eucharist as the body and blood of Christ, Mary’s perpetual virginity, prayers for the dead, and the intercession of saints, he realized the early Christians did not look like modern non-denominational Protestants.
This Brian Davila interview goes deep into one of the biggest questions Christians must face: if Jesus promised that the gates of Hades would not prevail against His church, and if the church is the pillar and foundation of the truth, could the early church have completely fallen into apostasy? Sam Shamoun explains why he could no longer accept the idea that the ancient church became totally corrupt in the second century.
Finally, Sam Shamoun explains why the sacraments are essential as the means of sanctifying grace, especially the Eucharist as spiritual nourishment for the Christian life. At the same time, Sam Shamoun gives hope to sincere believers who do not yet understand the fullness of the apostolic faith, while warning that once God reveals more truth, rejecting it becomes spiritually dangerous.
