And I made progress in the Jew’s religion above many of my equals in my own nation, being more abundantly zealous for the traditions of my fathers.
But when it pleased him who separated me from my mother’s womb and called me by his grace, To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the Gentiles: immediately I condescended not to flesh and blood. “Even though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persectutor…, I received mercy” (1Tm 1:13) : the conversion of Saint Paul

We must always keep in mind how much all of us are surrounded by so many proofs of the same love of God. If his justice had preceded repentance the world would have been annihilated. If God had been swift to punish the Church would not have known the apostle Paul, would not have received such a man into its bosom. The mercy of God is what transforms the persecutor into the apostle; it is this that changes wolf into shepherd and turned a publican into an evangelist (Mt 9:9). It is the mercy of God that, moved by our fate, has transformed us all; this is what has converted us.

When we see yesterday’s glutton begin to fast today, the former blasphemer refer to God with respect, one who was formerly vile only open his mouth to praise God, then we can wonder at this mercy of the Lord. Yes, my brethren, if God is good towards everyone he is particularly so towards sinners.

Would you even like to hear something strange from the point of view of our behavior but true from the point of view of our religion? Listen! whereas God shows himself demanding with regard to the just, for the sinner he has only kindness and gentleness. What strictness towards the just! What indulgence towards the sinner! Such is the novelty, the reversal God’s behaviour presents to us… And this is the reason why: to terrify the sinner, and especially the obstinate sinner, would be to deprive him of all confidence, throw him into despair. To flatter the just would be to soften the strength of his virtue, make him slacken his zeal. God is infinitely good! Fear of him is the safety of the just; his goodness brings back the sinner.

Peter therefore was kept in prison. But prayer was made without ceasing by the church unto God for him. St. Peter’s ministerial office continues… in the persons of those who come after him, we are bound to understand our Lord’s blessing, pronounced in the first instance upon him, as descending in due measure on the least of us His ministers who “keep the faith,” (1Tm 6,20) Peter being but the representative and type of them all…

“Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah: it is not flesh and blood that have revealed this to you but my Father who is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build My Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” August and glorious promise! Can it be, that it is all expended on St. Peter, how great soever that noble Apostle? Is it inserted in the “everlasting Gospel,” (Rv 14,6) to witness merely of one long since departed?

Is it the practice of the inspired word to exalt individuals? Does not the very exuberance of the blessing resist any such niggardly use of it? Does it not flow over in spite of us, till our unbelief is vanquished by the graciousness of Him who spoke it? Is it, in short, anything but the prejudices of education, which prevent so many of us from receiving it in that fullness of grace in which it was poured out? … If the promises to Christ’s Apostles are not fulfilled in the Church for ever after, why should the blessing attaching to the Sacraments extend after the first age?

Saints Peter and Paul, the two great Apostles and founders of the Roman Church, are honored together on this solemn feast. According to ancient tradition, St. Peter was crucified head downward near the Vatican, while St. Paul was beheaded outside one of the gates of Rome. The Church unites them in one feast and one prayer, for they were joined in faith, apostolic labor, and martyrdom. The Vatican Basilica honors the burial place of St. Peter, while St. Paul’s Outside-the-Walls honors the Apostle of the Gentiles.

“Go first and be reconciled with your brother”

In heaven there is a mercy that we attain by mercy here on earth… And there are two kinds of almsgiving: one good, the other better. The first consists in offering a morsel of bread to the poor; the other in at once forgiving the brother who has sinned against you. With our Lord’s help let us hasten to put into practice these two kinds of almsgiving that we may be fit to receive eternal pardon and the true mercy that is Christ’s. For he himself has said: “If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you will not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions” (Mt 6,14-15). And elsewhere the Holy Spirit cries aloud: “Should a man nourish anger against his fellows and expect healing from the Lord? Should a man refuse mercy to his fellows yet seek God’s pardon for his own sins?” (Sir 28,3-4)…

Let us make haste as much as we can and for as long as we live to acquire these two kinds of alms and distribute them to others. Then, on the day of judgment, we shall be able to say with full assurance: “Give, Lord, because we have given.”

TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS READINGS JUN 27, 2026 – The Meaning of the Word

The Saturday Mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary honors Our Lady as the holy Mother who brought forth the King who rules heaven and earth. In this Mass, the Church praises her perpetual virginity, her divine maternity, and her powerful intercession for the faithful. The prayers ask that, through the intercession of Blessed Mary ever Virgin, we may be delivered from present sorrow and brought to eternal joy.

St. Silverius, Pope and Martyr, was the son of Pope St. Hormisdas and entered the service of the Church before being chosen Pope in 536. His pontificate was marked by political and religious conflict, especially surrounding the Monophysite controversy and imperial pressure from Constantinople. He was unjustly deposed, exiled to the island of Palmaria, and died there after harsh treatment and privation.

Let us weep for the pagans who do not understand the salvation God wants to give them… Yes, a husband loves his wife less than we love all human beings, desiring to bring all human beings to salvation. Let us weep and moan over these unbelievers, because for them “the message of the cross is complete absurdity,” whereas it is in fact “the power of God and the wisdom of God.” (1 Cor 1:18.24)…

Look, O man! For you Jesus Christ took the form of a slave (Phil 2:7), for you he died on a cross, for you he rose again. And you say that it is impossible to believe in such a love, to adore such a God, while this King did for you, his enemy, what any father among us, a son, or a friend would not have done for you? …

When I say: “My God was attached to a cross,” the pagan answers: “Reason cannot accept that. He suffered, he let himself be crucified; so can he not save himself? … If he cannot save himself, how can he save the others? (cf. Mt 27:42). All of this is contrary to reason.” This is true. The cross is a mystery that is above human reason, it is the sign of a power that is beyond our understanding… When the three Hebrews triumphed over the flames after having been thrown into the furnace (Dan 3), it was more astonishing than if they had not been thrown into it. That Jona was swallowed by a whale is natural, it is normal; but the astonishing thing was that Jona lived in the monster’s belly. In the same way, Christ proved his divinity better by triumphing over death out of the very midst of death than if he had refused to die.

The Meaning of the Word

Sts. John and Paul were Christian officers under Julian the Apostate who suffered martyrdom in their own house on the Caelian Hill. During the ten days granted to them to consider renouncing their devotion to Christ, they distributed all their goods to the poor. Unlike many martyrs who were buried outside the city walls, they were honored with burial in the heart of Rome, a grace seen by early Christians as a special favor of Divine Providence. Sharing one home and one Faith on earth, they now share one immortal crown in heaven.

Book of Sirach 44,10-15.
But these were men of mercy, whose godly deeds have not failed: Good things continue with their seed, Their posterity are a holy inheritance, and their seed hath stood in the covenants.
And their children for their sakes remain for ever: their seed and their glory shall not be forsaken. Their bodies are buried in peace, and their name liveth unto generation and generation. Let the people shew forth their wisdom, and the church declare their praise.

“Do not be afraid: you are worth more than many sparrows”

  We shouldn’t desire or seek out visible signs without necessity when our Lord is always ready to come to the aid of his saints. He doesn’t make his power known in outward works or signs so as not to diminish the help we receive from him or cause us harm. This is how he supplies for the needs of his saints. He wants to show them that the hidden watchfulness he bears towards them never leaves them for a moment but nevertheless, in all things, he leaves them to undertake the combat according to their strength and take the trouble to pray.

But if some difficulty upsets them, as when they are sick or discouraged because of the weakness of their nature, he himself does everything in his power that they may be helped as they need and as he alone knows how. He strengthens them within as much as he can that they may have the strength to bear their difficulties. For he undoes their distress in the trust he gives them and arouses them to glorify him by this faith’s vision… Nevertheless, if there is a need for this secret assistance to be made explicit then he does so, but only by necessity. His ways are ways of great wisdom; they extend as far as need and necessity, but not just anyhow.

St. William, Abbot, was the founder of the Solitaries of Monte Vergine, a monastic congregation once widely spread throughout Southern Italy. His feast was inserted into the Calendar of the Universal Church by Pope Leo XIII, and his community was later joined to the Benedictines of Subiaco. He died in 1142 and was noted both for the austerity of his own life and for his great gentleness toward others. His body rests on the summit of the Parthenius, in the Basilica of Our Lady which he built, where many pilgrims continue to honor the Blessed Virgin.

Moses was beloved of God, and men: whose memory is in benediction. He made him like the saints in glory, and magnified him in the fear of his enemies, and with his words he made prodigies to cease. Saint Benedict established the peace of Christ in Europe

During a dark and turbulent age, when agriculture, honorable crafts, the study of the fine arts profane and divine were little esteemed and shamefully neglected by nearly all, there arose in Benedictine monasteries an almost countless multitude of farmers, craftsmen and learned people who did their utmost to conserve the memorials of ancient learning and brought back nations both old and new – often at war with each other – to peace, harmony and earnest work. From renascent barbarism, from destruction and ruin they happily led them back to benign influence human and Christian, to patient labor, to the light of truth, to a civilization renewed in wisdom and charity.

Nor was that all. It is essential in the Benedictine way of life that while engaged in manual or intellectual pursuits, all should strive continually to lift their hearts to Christ having that as their chief concern, and to burn with perfect love of Him. For the things of the earth or of the whole world cannot satisfy the mind of man which God created for Himself; rather their function given them by their Creator is to move and lift us by gradual steps to the possession of God. Therefore, it is most necessary “to prefer nothing to the love of Christ”; “to count nothing more dear to them than Christ”;[35] “let them prefer nothing whatever to Christ and may He bring us to life everlasting”.

To this most ardent love of the Divine Redeemer there should correspond love of the neighbor. We ought to cherish all as our brethren and help them in every way. Hence while people plan and foment hate and treachery against each other, while robbery, slaughter and innumerable hardships and miseries are increasing in this violent upheaval of nations and institutions, Benedict proclaims these most holy precepts to his followers: “Let special care be taken in receiving the poor and travelers, because in them Christ is more surely received”. “Let all guests who come to the monastery be entertained like Christ Himself, because He will say ‘I was a stranger and you took me in’.” “Before all things and above all things, special care must be taken of the sick, so that they be served in very deed as Christ Himself for He saith ‘I was sick and you visited Me’.”

TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS READINGS JUN 24, 2026 – The Meaning of the Word

The Nativity of St. John the Baptist is celebrated with special joy because, unlike most saints whose feast is kept on the day of their death, the Church honors the very day of his birth. His birth was surrounded by the gifts of the Holy Ghost and marked the coming of the one chosen to prepare the way of the Lord. St. John holds an eminent place in the history of the Incarnation, for Christ Himself praised him as the greatest among the prophets and among those born of woman. His life and mission were entirely ordered to Jesus Christ, making him the new Elias, the burning and shining light, and the humble herald of the Savior.

“What will this child be?”

What a wonder! The messenger is born previous to him who brought him into the world. John is indeed the voice and Jesus the Word (Mt 3,3; Jn 1,1)… The Word is born first of all in the mind and then prompts the voice that speaks it; the voice is expressed by the lips and makes the word known to those who listen. Thus Christ remained in his Father (by whom John was created in the same way as everything else) but John came forth from his mother and made everyone able to know Christ. The latter was Word from the beginning, before the world came to be; John was the voice who, at the end, preceded the coming of the Word. The word comes into being out of thought; the voice comes out of silence.

Thus Mary believes as she gives birth to Christ whereas, before he begot John, Zachariah was struck dumb. The former comes forth from maidenhood in its bud, the latter is born from an old and feeble woman. The Word remains within the heart of the one who ponders; the voice dies in the ear of the one who listens. Perhaps this is even the meaning of John’s saying: “He must increase but I must decrease” (Jn 3,30). For the prophecies of the Law and the prophets that were made known before Christ, as a voice is known before the Word, continued up to John in whom the last of these prefigurations came to an end. Afterwards, the grace of the Gospel and proclamation of that Kingdom of heaven which knows no end bore fruit and spread throughout the whole earth.

The Meaning of the Word

In Rome, devotion to St. John centered around the Lateran Basilica, where Pope Hilary erected two oratories, one in honor of St. John the Evangelist and the other in honor of St. John the Baptist. These oratories became so famous that they helped give the name of St. John to the Lateran Basilica itself. The greatness of St. John the Baptist consists entirely in his mission of preparing the way for Jesus Christ. He did not live for himself, but for Christ and His greater glory, showing the true humility that stands at the foundation of all greatness before God.

The silence of Zachary

John’s father was struck dumb for not believing he would be born. The Virgin Mary believed and conceived Christ in faith… But I have set out the mystery first so that if I find myself incapable of plumbing all the depths of it either for lack of time or lack of skill the Holy Spirit will enlighten you. His voice will make itself heard in your heart, without mine; for he is in your mind and heart, you are his temples (cf. 1Cor 3,16).

Zachary fell silent and lost the power of speech until John, the Lord’s precursor, was born and restored his speech… Zachary’s tongue was loosened because a voice was born. When John was announcing our Lord’s coming he was asked: “Who are you?” He replied: “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness” (Jn 1,23). John was a voice, but in the beginning the Lord was the Word (Jn 1,1). John was a voice for a time: but Christ, who in the beginning was the Word, is the Word in eternity.

Seek first the kingdom of God

“Seek first the kingdom of God and its righteousness and everything you need will be added to you”… It is said, then, that we should seek the Kingdom of God. “That we should seek”: it’s a simple word but it seems to me to be saying a great deal. It means… unceasing work for God’s Kingdom, not remaining in an indolent, motionless state but paying attention to one’s interior state so as to govern it well, not playing around at the exterior level… Seek God within yourself since Saint Augustine confesses that, so long as he sought him outside himself, he failed to find him. Seek him in your soul as in a pleasant dwelling place because this is the basis on which those servants of his establish them who try to put all the virtues into practice . We have to have an interior life, we have to move towards this; lacking this we lack everything… Let us try to make ourselves interior… Let us seek God’s glory, seek the reign of Jesus Christ…

“But, [you will tell me], there’s so much to do, so many household jobs, so much business in town, in the fields; work everywhere! Do we have to abandon it all, then, so as to think of nothing but God?” No; but these occupations have to be sanctified by seeking God in them and doing them to find him in them rather than to see them done. What our Lord wants is for us to seek his glory, his kingdom, his righteousness before all else and, for this, to make our foundation the interior life, faith, trust, love, religious exercises…, labors and sufferings, with God our sovereign Lord in view… Once we are firmly set in the search for God’s glory we can be assured that the rest will follow.

These are the Traditional Latin Mass Propers for the Fourth Sunday after Pentecost. The Epistle from St. Paul to the Romans teaches that the sufferings of this present life are not worthy to be compared with the glory to come, when creation itself will be freed from corruption. In the Gospel, Our Lord commands Simon Peter to put out into the deep, and the miraculous catch of fish reveals both Peter’s humility and Christ’s power. After this sign, Peter, James, and John leave all things and follow Him, becoming fishers of men.

Epistle to the Romans 8,18-23.
For I reckon that the sufferings of this time are not worthy to be compared with the glory to come that shall be revealed in us. For the expectation of the creature waiteth for the revelation of the sons of God. For the creature was made subject to vanity: not willingly, but by reason of him that made it subject, in hope. Because the creature also itself shall be delivered from the servitude of corruption, into the liberty of the glory of the children of God. For we know that every creature groaneth and travaileth in pain, even till now.         [Saint Catherine heard God say to her:] O dearest daughter, it is told in the holy Gospel, that when my Truth commanded the glorious apostle Peter to cast his nets into the sea, Peter replied, that all night long he was tired without taking anything (Lk 5,5), but, he added, at your command, I will throw them in. He threw it; he caught such a large quantity of fish that he could not retrieve it alone, and that he had to call the disciples to his aid. Consider this act of Peter! In the reality which has just been described, you will discover a figure, and you will understand by everything that I have told you that this figure applies to you. (…)

         Peter, I told you, at the command of the Word, cast the net: he was therefore obedient, believing with lively faith that he would catch fish, and indeed he caught many; but it was not overnight. Do you know what time of night it is? It is the dark night of mortal sin, where the soul is deprived of the light of grace. On this night, she cannot take anything, because she casts the net of her desire not into the ocean of life, but into the dead sea, where she finds only the fault which is not something. She tires in vain, all her efforts are useless. Those who impose all these penalties on themselves make themselves martyrs of the devil, not of Christ crucified.

         But when day breaks, when the soul comes out of the night of sin, to recover the light of grace, it finds at the same time in its spirit the commandment of the law that I gave it, to cast the net, at the word of my Son, loving me above all things, and the neighbor as himself. Docile from then on in the light of faith, with firm confidence, she casts her net, on His word, following the doctrine and examples of this gentle Word of love and of his disciples.

We shall be known by our fruit

Try to gather together more frequently to give thanks to God and to praise him. For when you come together frequently, Satan’s powers are undermined, and the destruction he threatens is done away with in the unanimity of your faith. Nothing is better than peace, in which all warfare between heaven and earth is brought to an end.

None of this will escape you if you have perfect faith and love toward Jesus Christ. These are the beginning and the end of life: faith the beginning, love the end. When these two are found together, there is God, and everything else concerning right living follows from them. No one professing faith sins; no one possessing love hates. “A tree is known by its fruit”. So those who profess to belong to Christ will be known by what they do. For the work we are about is not a matter of words here and now, but depends on the power of faith and on being found faithful to the end.

It is better to remain silent and to be than to talk and not be. Teaching is good if the teacher also acts. Now there was one teacher who “spoke, and it was made” (Ps 33:9), and even what he did in silence is worthy of the Father. He who has the word of Jesus can truly listen also to his silence in order to be perfect, that he may act through his speech and be known by his silence. Nothing is hidden from the Lord, but even our secrets are close to him. Let us then do everything in the knowledge that he is dwelling within us so that we may be his temples and he may be God within us.

TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS READINGS JUN 19, 2026 – The Meaning of the Word

St. Juliana Falconieri was born in Florence in 1270 and, from childhood, showed such holiness that her uncle, St. Alexis Falconieri, said her mother had given birth to an angel. At fifteen, she consecrated her virginity to God and later founded the Order of the Mantelette, becoming closely associated with the Servite Order devoted to the Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Near the end of her life, when illness prevented her from receiving Holy Communion, she asked that the Blessed Sacrament be held near her heart. When this was done, the Sacred Host miraculously entered her breast, and she died on June 19, 1340.

Sts. Gervase and Protase were twin brothers from Milan. Their parents had suffered martyrdom for the faith, and the two brothers also gave their lives for Christ during the reign of Emperor Nero. They were scourged and then beheaded, and St. Ambrose later honored them as the proto-martyrs of Milan. Near the end of the fourth century, St. Ambrose discovered their relics and solemnly enshrined them. This discovery greatly strengthened the faith and devotion of the people and helped spread their veneration throughout the Church. Their names are included in the Litany of the Saints, where the Church continues to ask for their intercession.

“Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps”

There has come a shout at midnight. What can this shout be, if not what the apostle talks of: in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will rise up imperishable, and as for us, we shall be changed (1 Cor 15:52)? Once the shout has been raised at midnight what happens next? They all arose. What’s the meaning of “They all arose”? The hour is coming, says the Lord himself, when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice, and come forth (Jn 5:28-29). (…)

What’s the meaning of “They didn’t take oil in their flasks”? In their hearts (…) I mean, look at these foolish virgins who didn’t carry oil with them; by their self-denial which earns them the name of virgins, and by their good works represented by the lamps they bring,’ they are intent on pleasing other people. And if they are intent on pleasing other people, and that’s why they do these admirable things, they are not carrying oil with them. So you, then, mind you carry it with you, carry it inside, where God can see; carry the testimony of your conscience there. (…) So if you refrain from unlawful things and perform good works in order to be admired by other people, there is no oil inside you (…)

Before those virgins went to sleep it doesn’t say that their lamps were going out. The wise ones’ lamps were burning from the oil inside them, from the assurance of their consciences, from their inner boast, from their deepest charity. But those of the foolish ones were also burning. Why were they burning then? Because there was no dearth of admiration from other people. But after they had risen, that is to say, in the resurrection from the dead, they began to trim their lamps, that is, to prepare to give God an account of their works. And because there is nobody then expressing admiration (…) they were asking for what they had always been used to, that is to say, to shine with someone else’s oil, to live in dependence on other people’s admiration. Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.

St. Ephrem the Syrian was born at Nisibis in Mesopotamia, cast out of his home by his pagan father, and later lived as a hermit in the desert. Though he never became a priest, he served as a deacon of the Church of Edessa and became renowned from early times as a teacher of the Universal Church, especially for his opposition to the Arians. His sacred hymns and writings entered the liturgical books of Syrians, Byzantines, Slavs, Armenians, and Copts, earning him in the Eastern Church the title “Lyre of the Holy Spirit.” He died at Edessa in 379, and Pope Benedict XV proclaimed him a Doctor of the Church in 1920, the only deacon honored with that title.

Sts. Mark and Marcellianus were twin brothers of an illustrious Roman family who gave their lives for Christ in 286 during the persecution of Diocletian. After cruel torments, they fearlessly confessed the Christian Faith and remained steadfast in their witness to Our Lord. According to the later Acts of St. Sebastian, they were nearly overcome by the tears and pleas of their family while imprisoned. Their martyrdom reminds the faithful that even natural affection must be ordered to Christ, whose grace strengthens souls to persevere in the Faith.

Dearly beloved, I charge thee, before God and Jesus Christ, who shall judge the living and the dead, by His coming, and his kingdom : Preach the word: be instant in season, out of season: reprove, entreat, rebuke in all patience and doctrine. True believers illumine the world!

In the outpouring of their hearts, the true faithful consider the greatness of divine omnipotence, they note the instability of their spirit and the debility of their heart, they thus temper all their actions, in order not to lose their footing by exceeding the right measure in higher or lower necessities, as Paul recommends to his faithful: “Act in everything without murmuring or dispute, in order to make yourselves blameless and pure, children of God without spot in the midst of a misguided generation and perverted, of a world where you shine like centers of light by presenting to it the Word of Life.”(Phil 2:14-16)

Man is as if at a crossroads: if he seeks in the light the salvation that comes from God, he will obtain it; if he chooses evil, he will follow the devil in punishment. Man must in fact bear his nature and all his works without murmuring, without the distortions of sin, without disputes, behaving like a true believer. If he loves good and hates evil, he will never risk his liberation on the day of judgment where he will be separated from all creatures who have deviated from good by embracing evil.

Those who act in this way, seeking not to hurt anyone, live as sons of God, in the simplicity of their good works, they avoid the murmurings and disputes, the negative emotions, which are the lot of the ordinary world. Insensitive to the traps of seduction, they encourage the esteem of those who congratulate themselves on their courage within a misguided and perverted generation. In the perfection of their true faith, they shine like these stars whose mission is to illuminate the world, as decided by the Creator of the universe. Through a doctrine that is incarnated in life, they will convert many men to God: it is in this way that the sinless Son of God gave light to all.

“What do you have that you have not received?” St. Paul says to us (1Cor. 4,7). If you acknowledge that this good is yours only for a time here below, you will be able to gain a possession in heaven that will never end. Remember the servants in the gospel who had received some talents from their master and what the master, on his return, rendered to each of them. The Meaning of the Word

Tuesday Feria after the Third Sunday after Pentecost calls the faithful to humility, vigilance, and trust in God’s mercy. The Lesson from St. Peter teaches us to humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God, cast our anxieties upon Him, and resist the devil steadfast in faith. In the Gospel, Our Lord reveals the joy of heaven over one sinner who repents through the parables of the lost sheep and the lost drachma.

First Epistle of Saint Peter 5,6-11.
Be you humbled therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in the time of visitation: Casting all your care upon him, for he hath care of you. Be sober and watch: because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour. Whom resist ye, strong in faith: knowing that the same affliction befalls, your brethren who are in the world. “Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep”

This man who has a hundred sheep is the good shepherd (Jn 10,11), Christ is the merciful shepherd who had turned the whole flock of humankind into one single sheep, namely Adam. He had set this sheep in the delights of Paradise and the region of the pastures of life. But, ignoring the howling of the wolves, it forgot the shepherd’s voice, lost the way leading to the fold of salvation and found itself covered all over with fatal wounds. Christ came into the world to look for this sheep and found it again in the womb of the Virgin. He came, was born in the flesh, set the sheep upon the cross and took it on the shoulders of his Passion. Then, full of the joy of the resurrection, he lifted it up through his Ascension to the heavenly dwellings.

“He called his friends and neighbors”, that is to say the angels, “and said to them: ‘Rejoice with me because I have found the sheep that was lost’ ” The angels sing and exult with Christ on account of the return of the Lord’s sheep. They are not upset to see it sitting before them on the throne of majesty since envy no longer exists in heaven, from which it has been cast out along with the devil. Thanks to the Lamb, who took away the sin of the world (Jn 1,29), the sin of envy can make its way into heaven no more.

Brethren, Christ came to seek us out on earth; let us look for him in heaven. He has carried us into the glory of his divinity; let us bear him in our bodies by the holiness of our whole life.

St. Vitus was a martyr whose life is mentioned in the Martyrology of St. Jerome. Modestus was his teacher, and Crescentia was his nurse. St. Vitus was handed over by his own father to be scourged because he had been baptized. His judge was struck blind, but was healed through the prayers of St. Vitus. After this, Modestus and Crescentia took him away to foreign lands. Later, he was summoned by Diocletian to free the emperor’s son, who was tormented by the devil. After St. Vitus delivered the boy, he was ordered to worship false gods. When he refused, he, together with Modestus and Crescentia, was thrown into a cauldron of molten lead and flaming resin. They died as martyrs in the year 303.

“Return to me”

“Return to me with all your heart” and prove that your repentance is genuine “by fasting and weeping and lamentation”. Fast now and you will feast hereafter; weep now and you will laugh hereafter. Present mourning brings future joy… Well, I say it is not your garments you must rend but your sinful hearts which, like the wine-skin, will burst unless you tear them.

When you have done this you can return to the Lord your God from whom you have been estranged by your former sins. Do not allow the greatness of your sin make you despair of his pardon. The greater the sin, the more striking is the power of God’s mercy. “The Lord is gracious and merciful”, preferring the repentance of the sinner to his death, “slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love”, not being impatient, as we are, but waiting a whole lifetime for our return to him.

St. Anthony of Padua, of the Order of St. Francis, was renowned for his fervent preaching, deep learning, and zeal for the salvation of souls. Known as the “Hammer of Heretics,” he labored in France, Italy, and Sicily, where his words and miracles turned many hearts back to God. Desiring martyrdom, he entered the Franciscan Order and set out for Mauretania, but Divine Providence led him instead to become one of the Church’s greatest preachers. Both during his life and after his death in 1231, St. Anthony became widely venerated as a worker of miracles and a powerful intercessor for the faithful.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path” (Ps 119[118]:105)

The lamp on the lampstand is our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the Father’s true light “who enlightens everyone coming into the world” (Jn 1:9): in other words, the Father’s Wisdom and Word. Having accepted our flesh, he truly became, and was called, the “light of the world”. By our faith and devotion he is honored and exalted in the Church. In this way he is made visible to all nations and shines out for “all the people in the house”, namely the whole world, as he said: “They do not light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand , where it gives light to all in the house” (Mt 5:15).

As we have seen, Christ calls himself a lamp. God by nature, he became flesh according to the plan of salvation: a light held within the flesh as if in a vase… This is what David was thinking when he said: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path” (Ps 119[118]:105). Since he causes the darkness of ignorance and the evil of men to vanish, my Savior and my God is called a lamp in Scripture. And since he is the only one able to obliterate the darkness of ignorance and disperse the shadows of sin, he has become the way of salvation for all. He leads towards the Father all those who, through understanding and virtue, walk with him along the path of the commandments as on a road of righteousness.

The lampstand is holy Church because the Word of God shines out through her preaching. This is how the beams of its truth can enlighten the whole world… On one condition, however: so long as it is not hidden under the letter of the Law. Anyone who clings to Scripture according to the letter only is living according to the flesh; he is placing the lamp under a bushel basket. But when, to the contrary, the Church is set on the lampstand, it enlightens everyone.

The Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus honors the Heart of the Savior, pierced on the Cross and burning with infinite charity for mankind. Its liturgical devotion was first promoted in France by St. John Eudes, who composed an office and Mass for the Sacred Heart in the seventeenth century. This devotion grew in the life of the Church as a call to contemplate the love of Christ wounded by sin, especially through acts of reparation and gratitude.

The throne of the cross

“The people who sit in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwell in the land of gloom a light has shone” (Is 9,1), the light of redemption. When they saw that the tyrant, death, was wounded to death, this people came out from darkness to light; from death they passed to life.

The wood of the cross bears him who made the universe. Undergoing death for my life, he who bears the universe is fastened to the tree as one dead. He who breathes life into the dead gives up the spirit on the tree. The cross brings no shame to him at all but, like a trophy, confirms his complete victory. Like a just judge he is seated on the throne of the cross. The crown of thorns he wears on his brow confirms his victory: “Take courage, I have conquered the world and the prince of this world by taking away the sin of this world” (Jn 16,33; 1,29).

That the cross stands for victory, the stones themselves cry out (cf Lk 19,40), those stones of Calvary where Adam, our forefather, was buried according to an old tradition held by our fathers. “Adam, where are you?” (Gn 3,9), Christ cries out again from the cross. “I am seeking for you there and, that I might find you, I stretched out my hands on the cross. I turn my outstretched hands to the Father in thanksgiving for having found you, then I turn them also to you to welcome you. I have not come to judge your sin but to save you out of my love for humankind (cf Jn 3,17). I have not come to curse you for your disobedience but to bless you by my obedience. I will shelter you with my wings, you will find refuge in my shade; my faithfulness will cover you with the shield of the cross and you will no more fear the terror of the night (cf Ps 91[90],1-5) because you will know day without setting (Wsd 7,10). I will seek out your life, concealed in darkness and the shadow of death (Lk 1,79). I will take no rest until, humbled and having descended even to hell to search for you, I have led you back to heaven.”

“I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves”

According to the people here we run two dangers. The first is that, after taking our money, our guide may leave us on some deserted island or throw us into the sea so as to escape the governor of Canton. The second is that, supposing he leads us to Canton and we come into the governor’s presence, the latter will treat us badly or throw us into prison. For our proceeding is unheard of. Numerous decrees prevent any one at all from gaining access to China and it is strictly forbidden for foreigners to make their way in without the king’s authorization. Besides these two dangers there are many other even greater ones, that the locals know nothing about. It would take a good deal of time to describe them all; however, I will not pass by without citing some of them.

The first is to lose our hope and trust in God’s mercy. It is for his love and service that we go to make known his law and Jesus Christ his Son, our Redeemer and Lord. He well knows this since it was he, in his blessed mercy, who gave us these desires. But to lack confidence in his mercy and might in the midst of the hazards into which we may fall for his service’ sake is an incomparably greater danger than all the evils the enemies of God might raise up against us. For indeed, if his greater service requires it, he will keep us from the dangers of this life, while without God’s permission and authorization, the devils and their attendants can do nothing at all to harm us.
