Why does the Catholic Church require priestly celibacy—and is there a biblical basis for bishops, cardinals, patriarchs, and the pope remaining unmarried? In this powerful teaching, Sam Shamoun examines clerical celibacy across the Latin Catholic Church, Eastern Catholic rites, Orthodox Church, and Assyrian Church while explaining the difference between church discipline and unchangeable dogma.
Sam Shamoun shows from Matthew 19:10–12 and 1 Corinthians 7 that celibacy is a special gift from God. Jesus Christ taught that some willingly live as eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven, while the Apostle Paul explained that remaining unmarried can allow believers to devote themselves more completely to Christian ministry. However, those who lack self-control and burn with sexual passion should marry rather than enter a celibate vocation they have not been called to fulfill.
The discussion also explains why the Church can require celibacy for higher offices such as bishop, cardinal, patriarch, or pope. Sam Shamoun emphasizes that nobody is forced to accept these offices. A Christian who does not possess the gift of celibacy can marry, raise a godly family, and serve Christ’s Church as a theologian, professor, catechist, teacher, or in another ministry.
Using Jeremiah 16:1–4 and 1 Corinthians 7:25–26, Sam Shamoun demonstrates that Scripture recognizes circumstances in which remaining unmarried is wise or necessary. He also addresses the common Protestant objection based on 1 Timothy 3, explaining that “the husband of one wife” does not command every bishop to marry but disqualifies men guilty of divorce and remarriage.
Finally, Sam Shamoun warns against entering the clergy for the wrong reasons. Those struggling with uncontrolled sexual desires should not pursue a celibate office and risk sexual immorality, abuse, or scandal within the Church. The shared practice of celibate bishops among Catholic, Orthodox, and Assyrian Christians provides powerful historical testimony that this discipline has ancient Christian and apostolic roots.
