What does the “true church” look like—and why does Christianity need bishops, apostolic succession, sacraments, and a visible church community? In this powerful conversation, a former atheist and nihilist asks Sam Shamoun how to defend Christianity, choose a denomination, and identify the church established by Jesus Christ and the apostles.
Sam Shamoun then addresses the caller’s non-denominational Protestant background and explains why Christianity cannot be reduced to private Bible study, online sermons, or informal meetings. Scripture commands Christians to assemble, submit to spiritual leaders, and belong to a church governed by bishops and deacons.
Using Hebrews 10, Hebrews 13, 1 Timothy 3, Philippians 1, the Book of Acts, and the writings of Irenaeus, Sam Shamoun presents the biblical and historical case for bishops and apostolic succession. Sam Shamoun explains how the apostles appointed bishops, who preserved the Christian faith and appointed successors. Irenaeus traced the bishops of Rome from Peter and Paul through Linus, Anacletus, Clement of Rome, and later successors—demonstrating an organized, visible, apostolic church long before modern Baptist, Lutheran, Pentecostal, or non-denominational communities appeared.
Sam Shamoun also examines the historic Coptic Orthodox Church, Assyrian Church of the East, Eastern Orthodox Church, Oriental Orthodox churches, and Catholic Church. Although these ancient Christian churches experienced schisms, Sam Shamoun shows that they still preserve remarkable agreement concerning infant baptism, baptismal regeneration, Mary’s perpetual virginity, Mary’s holiness, the intercession and veneration of saints, prayers for the departed, apostolic authority, and the Eucharist as the true body and blood of Jesus Christ.
Finally, Sam Shamoun quotes Martin Luther admitting that Protestants received Holy Scripture, baptism, the sacraments, the pulpit, and the apostolic heritage through the Catholic Church. Sam Shamoun challenges the former atheist to compare modern Protestant denominations with the ancient apostolic churches and ask which communities can genuinely trace their bishops, doctrine, sacraments, and authority back to Jesus Christ and the apostles.
