The discussion begins with the purpose of the Hebrew Scriptures, why the nations need the revelation of the God of Abraham, and Isaiah’s teaching that God’s servant will bring light and knowledge of God to the Gentiles.
Sam Shamoun then presses the Karaite Jew on difficult Old Testament passages concerning the destruction of the Canaanites and Amalekites, including God’s command to destroy warriors, infants, and animals. Sam Shamoun asks whether these commands can be morally justified without Jesus Christ and explains why Christians must confront and defend the Old Testament because Jesus confirmed the Law and the Prophets.
The debate turns to Messianic prophecy, the Davidic throne, and the identity of the coming Messiah. Examining Isaiah 9, Isaiah 10, Isaiah 11, 2 Samuel 7, and 1 Chronicles 28, Sam Shamoun argues that the promised Son of David will reign forever as the Prince of Peace and the Mighty God—El Gibbor, a divine title used for Yahweh Himself. Can the Messiah’s eternal kingdom be conditional, or do these prophecies reveal that the Messiah is God in the flesh?
Finally, Sam Shamoun examines Haggai 2 and the prophecy that the glory of the Second Temple would surpass the glory of Solomon’s Temple. Since the Second Temple lacked the Ark of the Covenant, Aaron’s rod, the tablets of stone, and the visible glory of God, what made it greater than the First Temple? Sam Shamoun argues that the answer points directly to the arrival of Jesus Christ, the Messiah whom Israel missed.
