In this powerful teaching, Sam Shamoun examines the Book of Enoch, the Ethiopian Bible, and the words of Jesus Christ in John 3:10–13 to explain why 1 Enoch should not be accepted as inspired Scripture.
Sam Shamoun argues that although Enoch and Elijah were taken from the earth, Jesus declared that no one had ascended into heaven and returned to reveal its mysteries. Before the resurrection and ascension of Christ, the righteous dead entered Abraham’s bosom in Sheol or Hades—not the third heaven or heavenly Jerusalem. Sam Shamoun contrasts this with the later experiences of the apostle John and the apostle Paul, who were permitted to see heaven only after Jesus Christ opened the way.
The discussion also examines the Son of Man passages in 1 Enoch 70–71. Sam Shamoun highlights the confusion surrounding Enoch’s apparent transformation into the Son of Man and the later Jewish traditions identifying Enoch with Metatron—the “lesser Yahweh,” the heavenly counterpart, and the second power in heaven. These teachings raise serious questions about whether the Book of Enoch could truly have come from the biblical Enoch.
Finally, Sam Shamoun shows how the Book of Enoch depends on earlier canonical Old Testament writings such as Daniel 7 and Isaiah 42. Its language about the Son of Man, the Ancient of Days, the Head of Days, and the Elect One appears to draw from biblical prophecy. While Christians may read the Book of Enoch as ancient Jewish literature, Sam Shamoun explains why it should not be treated as inspired Scripture simply because it appears in the Ethiopian Orthodox Bible.
