Why do so many Christians say, “I just need Jesus and my Bible”? In this powerful teaching, Sam Shamoun challenges the idea that a Christian can faithfully follow Jesus while rejecting the local church, bishops, elders, pastors, sacraments, and spiritual authority established in Scripture.
Sam Shamoun walks through Hebrews 10, Hebrews 13, Acts 2, Acts 20, Matthew 28, Ephesians 4, and James 5 to show that the New Testament never presents Christianity as an isolated relationship between “me, Jesus, and my Bible.” Instead, believers are commanded to assemble together, submit to spiritual leaders, receive teaching, be discipled, be baptized, break bread, confess sins, receive prayer and anointing, and grow within the body of Christ.
Sam Shamoun also explains why online Christianity and YouTube teachers cannot replace the church. Scripture says the Holy Spirit gives shepherds, elders, overseers, pastors, and teachers to guard the flock, preserve sound doctrine, protect Christians from false teaching, and help believers reach spiritual maturity. If Christians reject the very teachers and church structure the Bible itself commands, can they really claim to be following the Bible alone?
The discussion also addresses Acts 2 and the earliest Christian community, where converts were baptized and immediately devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer. Sam Shamoun argues that conversion to Christ was never meant to end with an individual believer reading Scripture alone—it brought the believer into an apostolic community with teaching, worship, sacraments, accountability, and leadership.
Finally, Sam Shamoun uses James 5 and other passages to challenge Christians who reject church authority: if you have no elders, no local church, no Christian assembly, and no spiritual leaders, how do you obey commands to call the elders of the church, receive anointing, confess sins, pray together, and submit to those who keep watch over your soul?
