The oldest written witness to the Assumption of Mary is a document the Church herself rejected as apocryphal — and it still proves the belief was already ancient. Joe McClane reads the earliest sources: St. Justin Martyr around 150 AD, St. Irenaeus on Mary as the New Eve, Enoch, Elijah, and Moses — the assumptions that came before Mary’s — the Woman and the Ark in the Apocalypse, and the ancient Liber Requiei (“Book of Mary’s Repose,” 3rd-5th century) — all the way to Pope Pius XII’s infallible definition in Munificentissimus Deus on November 1, 1950. Rome didn’t invent the Assumption. Rome confirmed what the Church already believed.
