Are Catholics obligated to give cash to every panhandler they encounter?
A popular answer among many Catholics is simple: give them the money and leave the rest to God. But as a Traditional Catholic and a thirty-year law-enforcement veteran, I believe that approach ignores an uncomfortable reality: indiscriminate cash handouts can enable addiction, prolong homelessness, and sometimes place families in danger.
Catholic charity is not optional. We are called to care for the poor, feed the hungry, and practice the corporal works of mercy. But authentic charity is not blind sentimentality. As St. Thomas Aquinas teaches, we should help a sinner as a man—not encourage him in sin.
