The Problem With Blaming Mental Illness – Brian Holdsworth

“To claim that a person doesn’t deserve punishment because they weren’t capable of choosing is dehumanizing and ultimately self-refuting.”

The Lindsay Clancy trial has revived an uncomfortable question: when someone commits a horrifying act, where does mental illness end and moral evil begin?

Modern psychology often approaches human behavior through the categories of physical science – brain chemistry, neurological dysfunction, trauma, pathology, and environmental causes. But can those categories give us a complete explanation of human behavior or do they sometimes describe what is happening while leaving unanswered the deeper question of why a person chose what they did?

In this video, I argue that our entire concept of justice depends on treating human beings as genuine moral agents, not merely biological machines responding inevitably to physical causes. Mental illness can certainly diminish or even eliminate culpability in some circumstances. But if psychology excludes morality from its analysis by definition, can it really determine when someone is morally responsible?

And perhaps there is another question we don’t ask often enough: does mental illness always cause destructive behavior, or can destructive moral choices themselves contribute to psychological disorder?
