The gospel reading highlights the tendency of people to reject messages that require change, exemplified by the responses to St. John the Baptist and Jesus. Many find excuses to ignore the call to repentance and salvation, preferring a self-serving interpretation of faith. The true gospel, however, demands a commitment to change and a pursuit of holiness, as exemplified by the lives of St. John the Baptist and Jesus.
