“The solution is, nobody should be taking their clothes off to sell gambling apps.”
Another culture-war controversy involving Sydney Sweeney has exposed something deeper than disagreement over one advertisement: both sides of the political spectrum seem increasingly willing to abandon coherent principles whenever doing so helps them attack the other side.
In this video, I look at the strange reaction to Sweeney’s latest ad campaign, the sudden objections to sexualization from parts of the Left, and the willingness of parts of the Right to celebrate something they would normally condemn simply because it irritates their political opponents.
The problem is bigger than hypocrisy. Our culture increasingly treats every question as a choice between two extremes: sexual license or prudishness, ugliness or pornography, progressive ideology or whatever happens to trigger progressives.
Traditional Christian virtue ethics offers another answer. Beauty should be celebrated, but with dignity. Sexuality is good, but it belongs within proper boundaries. And conservatism means more than simply cheering whatever makes your political enemies angry.
