Is the Rapture really taught in the Bible—and does Scripture actually predict a future seven-year tribulation? In this detailed biblical discussion, Sam Shamoun responds to a former Jehovah’s Witness who became Calvinist and later Catholic, breaking down some of the most common teachings about the Rapture, Daniel’s 70 weeks, Matthew 24, the destruction of Jerusalem, and the thousand-year reign of Christ.
Sam Shamoun begins with 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 and explains what Scripture means when believers are “caught up” to meet the Lord in the air. Sam Shamoun challenges the popular evangelical idea that Christians will be taken to heaven for seven years before a future tribulation, arguing that the New Testament never explicitly teaches a future seven-year tribulation. Instead, Sam Shamoun shows where this interpretation comes from—the final “week” of Daniel 9.
Sam Shamoun then walks carefully through Daniel 9:20–27, explaining the prophecy of the seventy weeks, the 490 years, the coming and cutting off of the Messiah, the covenant, the cessation of sacrifices, and the destruction of Jerusalem and the Second Temple. Sam Shamoun connects Daniel’s prophecy with the Jewish-Roman War and argues that the final seven-year period was fulfilled in the events surrounding Jerusalem’s destruction rather than being a future end-times tribulation.
The discussion then moves to Matthew 24 and Mark 13, where Jesus warns about wars, persecution, the abomination of desolation, and the coming destruction of the Temple. Sam Shamoun explains why he believes Jesus was directly applying Daniel’s prophecy to Jerusalem and the Second Temple, while still affirming that Jesus Christ will physically and bodily return at the end of the age, raise the dead, judge the living and the dead, and usher in the new heavens and new earth.
Finally, Sam Shamoun addresses Revelation 20 and the thousand-year reign of Christ. He explains the predominant Catholic amillennial interpretation associated especially with St. Augustine, while also discussing the earlier historic premillennial view found among Christians such as Irenaeus, Justin Martyr, Papias, and the Epistle of Barnabas. Sam Shamoun explains why this question is not treated as a dogmatic matter and shares why he personally leans toward a future millennial reign while acknowledging the historic diversity of interpretation within Christianity.
