Most people think so. But Christ and His Church teach that Hell has a punishment even worse.
The Church has always distinguished the two principal punishments of Hell:
🔥 Poena Sensus — the Pain of Sense, the real suffering endured by the condemned.
💔 Poena Damni — the Pain of Loss, the eternal deprivation of the Beatific Vision and complete separation from God.
Every human soul was created to know, love, and possess God forever. To lose Him for all eternity is the deepest misery imaginable and the greatest punishment of Hell.
Our Lord warned about Hell not to lead us to despair, but to call us to repentance while His mercy is still available.
May these truths move us to seek holiness, persevere in God’s grace, and never lose sight of the eternal happiness for which we were created.
