Why is Mary called the Ark of the New Covenant—and does the Bible actually support this Catholic and Orthodox teaching? In this powerful biblical study, Sam Shamoun connects the Ark of the Covenant, the Tabernacle, the glory cloud, the Second Temple, the prophecy of Jeremiah, the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ, and the miraculous conception of Christ in the womb of the Virgin Mary.
Sam Shamoun begins by explaining that when the Jewish people returned from the Babylonian exile and built the Second Temple, the original Ark of the Covenant was never recovered. Unlike the Tabernacle of Moses and Solomon’s Temple, the Second Temple was not filled by the visible glory cloud of God. However, 2 Maccabees records that Jeremiah hid the Ark in a cave and declared that its location would remain unknown until God gathered His people together and showed them mercy.
Was Jeremiah’s prophecy unfulfilled—or did God reveal the Ark in a greater and unexpected way?
Sam Shamoun demonstrates that Jesus Christ is the true Temple and Tabernacle of God. John 1:14 says that the Word became flesh and “dwelt” among us, using language that means God pitched His tent or tabernacled among humanity. Jesus also identified His physical body as the Temple that would be destroyed and raised again after three days.
The connection becomes even clearer at the Transfiguration. Jesus ascends a mountain after six days, just as Moses entered Mount Sinai on the seventh day. Moses and Elijah appear with Jesus, the glory of Christ is revealed, and a cloud overshadows them while the Father declares, “This is My beloved Son; listen to Him.” The glory cloud, the mountain, the Tabernacle, the Law, the Prophets, and the presence of God all point directly to Jesus Christ.
Sam Shamoun then shows why Mary is the Ark of the New Covenant. In Luke 1, the angel Gabriel tells Mary that the Holy Spirit will come upon her and the power of the Most High will “overshadow” her. This is the same biblical language used for the glory cloud overshadowing the Tabernacle and the disciples at the Transfiguration. The divine presence that once inhabited the Holy of Holies now inhabits the womb of the Virgin Mary.
The original Ark contained the tablets of the covenant, the manna from heaven, and Aaron’s priestly rod. Mary carried Jesus Christ, the eternal Word of God, the true Bread from heaven, and the eternal High Priest. Therefore, Mary contained within her womb the fulfillment of everything found inside the Ark of the Covenant.
Sam Shamoun explains that Jeremiah’s prophecy was fulfilled—not through the recovery of the old wooden Ark, but through the revelation of a greater Ark, a greater Temple, a greater Manna, a greater Priesthood, and a greater Covenant. Mary is the new Ark because she carried the incarnate Son of God, Jesus Christ, in all His fullness.
