Luther built his German Bible on the Jewish Rabbis’ own Hebrew canon. Henry VIII sent an envoy to Venice to recruit actual Jewish Rabbis to rule on his divorce. Two ruptures, one pattern: both went to the Synagogue; neither man submitted to that authority either — only to his own private judgment.
