Fr. Donald Calloway never planned to become a priest. He never planned to become Catholic at all. Raised in a secular home, using drugs, incarcerated at 18, long hair down to his waist, he was the last person anyone expected to be wearing a collar. When his parents converted and became super devout, he thought they had joined a cult.
Then God hit him with the “divine two-by-four.”
Today, after 19 years as a priest in the Marian Fathers, Fr. Calloway sees a church under siege, not just from without, but from within. Belgian bishops blessing same-sex unions. The German Synodal Way defying perennial teaching on homosexuality and abortion. A formal correction of Pope Francis’s statement on Holy Communion. He asks himself: what would I have thought if I encountered this madness back when I was first knocking on the church door?
His answer is honest. His warning is urgent.
Don’t let the chaos inside the hierarchy block you from the fullness of truth. The Catholic Church remains the true church founded by Jesus Christ. But these are the days when heroic virtue is required. If it comes to it, Fr. Calloway says, we must be willing to go underground, even to lose our priestly faculties, rather than be unfaithful to Christ.
Cling to Our Lady. Cling to Saint Joseph. Imitate the saints. The possibility for sanctity is only minutes away, because there is ample opportunity to practice heroic virtue today.
