Why do Catholics pray the Hail Mary—and is honoring Mary biblical or a form of idolatry? In this powerful conversation, a former Mormon who became an atheist, later joined a Baptist church, and is now exploring the Catholic Church asks Sam Shamoun about the Hail Mary, Marian devotion, repentance, confession, and the intercession of saints.
Sam Shamoun explains that the Hail Mary is deeply rooted in Scripture. “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee” comes from Luke 1:28, while “blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus” comes from Luke 1:42. Sam Shamoun shows that Mary is holy, the Mother of God and the mother of Emmanuel—God with us—and explains why Christians ask Mary to “pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.”
The discussion examines the biblical and historical foundations for the intercession of saints. Sam Shamoun explains that Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and the ancient Church of the East all honored Mary, prayed for the dead in Christ, and sought the prayers of saints in heaven long before the Protestant Reformation. These Christian practices also have roots in ancient Jewish traditions involving the patriarchs, matriarchs, angels, and the righteous departed.
Sam Shamoun then connects Marian intercession to repentance, confession, the priesthood, and the Eucharist. In the Old Testament, Israelites confessed their sins to priests so that the proper sacrifice could be offered. In James 5, Christians are commanded to call the elders of the church, confess their sins, receive anointing, and pray for one another because “the prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.” If righteous Christians on earth can intercede for us, how much more powerful are the prayers of Mary, Peter, John, Saint Michael, Saint Gabriel, and the saints perfected in heaven?
Finally, Sam Shamoun turns to Luke 1, where Elizabeth—filled with the Holy Spirit—praises Mary, and John the Baptist leaps for joy in his mother’s womb after hearing Mary’s voice. Mary prophesies that all generations will call her blessed. Sam Shamoun challenges Christians to ask why the Holy Spirit inspired Elizabeth and John the Baptist to honor Mary while many modern churches ignore her. Far from idolatry, biblical Marian veneration honors Jesus Christ and recognizes Mary’s unique role in salvation history.
