Was Jesus really thirty-three years old when He was crucified—or have Christians repeated a number that the Bible never explicitly gives?
Luke 3:23 says Jesus was “about thirty” when He began His ministry—not when He died. John 8:57 records His opponents saying, “You are not yet fifty years old.” St. Irenaeus, writing around AD 180, argued that Jesus had passed forty and was approaching fifty, claiming that elders associated with the Apostle John transmitted this information.
