Traditional Catholic teaching associates this fire with the poena sensus — the pain of sense, a real punishment of the damned. The Church affirms its reality without pretending to explain completely how this mysterious fire acts upon separated souls.

Hell must never be confused with Purgatory. Purgatory purifies souls already destined for Heaven. Hell does not purify, restore, or eventually release the damned. Its punishment is everlasting.
🙏 Yet Christ’s warnings are also acts of mercy. He revealed the consequences of mortal sin while repentance is still possible—so that sinners may turn back to God before death and judgment.
Christ warned us about the fire that never ceases so that we would never have to enter it.
