How do we know the Bible is inspired—and who gave Protestants the authority to interpret Scripture apart from the historic Church? In this powerful dialogue, Sam Shamoun challenges a non-denominational Christian who questions whether Catholic doctrine can truly claim continuity with the apostles Peter and Paul. Sam Shamoun exposes the assumption behind the argument: before using the Bible to judge the Catholic Church or Orthodox Church, Protestants must explain how they know which books belong in the Bible, who wrote them, and why the biblical canon should be trusted.
Sam Shamoun explains that the history of the canonization of the Bible, the early Church Fathers, and apostolic succession cannot be separated. Saint Ignatius of Antioch—a disciple of the apostles and bishop of the Church where believers were first called Christians—taught submission to the bishop and referred to the universal Church as the Catholic Church. Using Acts 20 and 1 Timothy, Sam Shamoun shows that the Holy Spirit appointed bishops through the apostles to shepherd the Church, preserve Scripture, defend Christian doctrine, and pass down the apostolic faith through an unbroken chain of authority.
The discussion then turns to water baptism, baptismal regeneration, and the forgiveness of sins. Sam Shamoun demonstrates that the earliest Christians unanimously rejected the modern Baptist belief that baptism is merely symbolic. Clement of Rome, the Epistle of Barnabas, Irenaeus, Polycarp, Saint Ignatius, and the Nicene Creed testify that Christians are born again through water and the Holy Spirit. John 3:5, Titus 3:5, 1 Peter 3:21, and Philippians 4:3 all support the historic Christian understanding of baptism.
Finally, Sam Shamoun encourages the caller to continue studying Church history, the early Church Fathers, the biblical canon, Catholicism, Orthodoxy, apostolic authority, bishops, the sacraments, and the teachings preserved from the apostles. This exchange is not simply about winning an argument—it is about pursuing Jesus Christ, discovering the fullness of truth, and finding the Church established by Christ and continued through apostolic succession.
