In this powerful biblical teaching, Sam Shamoun examines Genesis 35:16–19, Luke 8:54–55, James 2:26, Matthew 10:28, Revelation 6:9–11, and 2 Corinthians 5:1–9 to explain the Christian afterlife, heaven, Paradise, Sheol, resurrection, and the intermediate state.
Sam Shamoun begins with the death of Rachel, whose soul departed from her body after she gave birth to Benjamin. Sam Shamoun then compares Rachel’s death with the resurrection of Jairus’s daughter, whose spirit returned when Jesus Christ commanded her to arise. Together with James 2:26—“the body apart from the spirit is dead”—these passages reveal the biblical distinction between the physical body and the immaterial soul and spirit.
Sam Shamoun then turns to Jesus’ words in Matthew 10:28, where Jesus warns against those who can kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Sam Shamoun also examines the conscious souls of the Christian martyrs beneath the heavenly altar in Revelation 6. These saints remember their lives on Earth, pray for divine justice, receive white robes, and await the resurrection and the completion of God’s plan.
Finally, Sam Shamoun explains Paul’s teaching about the earthly tent, the heavenly dwelling, being absent from the body, and being being at home with the Lord. Sam Shamoun distinguishes Paradise from God’s heavenly throne room and explains how Paradise, the third heaven, the kingdom of God, the resurrection body, immortality, and eternal life fit into the biblical picture of life after death.
