Are Catholic statues and icons a form of idolatry—and does the Bible prohibit Christians from venerating sacred images? In this powerful discussion, Sam Shamoun responds to a young Catholic who was raised around Protestant objections and fears that honoring Catholic statues, icons, the Virgin Mary, and the saints might cross the line into worship.
Sam Shamoun explains the crucial biblical difference between veneration and idolatry. Idolatry occurs when someone treats a creature as a god or goddess and offers that creature the worship belonging exclusively to the Creator. Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians do not believe that Mary, Paul, Michael, the angels, or the saints are gods. Honoring an image of a saint is therefore not the same as worshipping that saint as God.
Opening Exodus 20 and Romans 1:21–25, Sam Shamoun examines what Scripture actually condemns. The Bible condemns rejecting God, worshipping creation instead of the Creator, and transforming created beings into false gods. Sam Shamoun argues that these passages cannot be interpreted as a universal prohibition against every religious image, because God Himself commanded Moses to make golden cherubim for the Ark of the Covenant in Exodus 25 and Exodus 37. Sacred images also appeared throughout Solomon’s Temple.
Sam Shamoun then discusses the bronze serpent, explaining that the image became sinful only when the Israelites began treating it as a god. The same distinction appears when Joshua and the elders bow before the Ark of the Covenant without worshipping the cherubim as gods. The conversation ultimately addresses Catholic veneration, Protestant objections to icons, the Virgin Mary, the saints, the Ten Commandments, the Eucharist, biblical worship, the Ark of the Covenant, and the difference between honoring a sacred image and committing idolatry.
