Can the Assumption of Mary actually be defended from early Christianity—and what should a Protestant do when church history begins challenging everything he was taught? Sam Shamoun, in this powerful conversation, speaks with Tyler, a non-denominational Christian who has spent over a year studying the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, apostolic succession, Catholicism, Orthodoxy, the Church Fathers, Sacred Tradition, and the Marian dogmas.
Tyler explains how studying the Eucharist led him deeper into church history and forced him to reconsider Protestant assumptions about communion, baptism, apostolic succession, and the authority of Christian tradition. Sam Shamoun explains why Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians both confess that the Eucharist truly becomes the body and blood of Jesus Christ, even if different theological terminology is used to describe how this mystery takes place.
The conversation then turns to a major obstacle for Tyler: the Assumption of Mary. Sam Shamoun explains the ancient Feast of the Dormition and points out that Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and other ancient apostolic churches separated by centuries of schism nevertheless preserved a common tradition concerning Mary’s Dormition and her being taken into heaven. Sam Shamoun argues that this widespread agreement points to a tradition that predates those divisions and reaches deep into early Christianity.
Sam Shamoun also examines evidence from Epiphanius of Salamis, the Collyridians, Mary’s perpetual virginity, Elijah being taken up, Revelation 12, the woman clothed with the sun, ancient Christian commentaries, the Theotokos, and the early Church’s understanding of Mary. Sam Shamoun explains why the absence of constant discussion about a doctrine in early Christian writings does not mean Christians did not believe it—especially when the surviving writings were often responses to specific heresies, persecutions, and controversies.
Finally, Sam Shamoun encourages Tyler to continue seeking the fullness of truth without pretending to believe something he is not yet convinced of. The discussion becomes a powerful examination of Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Protestantism, the Eucharist, Sacred Tradition, Mary, the Assumption, the Dormition, apostolic Christianity, the Church Fathers, Revelation 12, and how Christians should evaluate doctrines preserved by the historic Church.
